PRBio Tech Hub: Driving Innovation and Economic Growth in Puerto Rico

The Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to fostering technological innovation and job creation across the United States has reached a significant milestone. In a groundbreaking move, the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) has designated 31 Tech Hubs nationwide, one of them being in Puerto Rico – the PRBio Tech Hub. This exciting development is part of the President’s “Investing in America” agenda. It will transform regions into globally competitive innovation centers, supercharging innovation and creating job opportunities in our backyard. We are proud to share that Puerto Rico has been designated a TechHub! The PRBio Tech Hub is set to make waves in the fields of biopharmaceutical and manufacturing, and in OcyonBio we’re proud to be part of the effort that made this designation possible.

The Tech Hub Initiative: A Vision for American Competitiveness

The Tech Hubs program, authorized by the bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act and signed into law by President Biden in August 2022, is an ambitious economic development initiative. Its primary goal is to enhance the capacity of selected regions to manufacture, commercialize, and deploy cutting-edge technology that will bolster American competitiveness on the global stage. These hubs are diverse, spanning urban and rural areas, and they focus on a wide range of industries, including autonomous systems, quantum computing, biotechnology, clean energy, semiconductor manufacturing, and more.

PRBio Tech Hub: Elevating Puerto Rico’s Tech Ecosystem

One of the standout designees of the Tech Hubs program is the PRBio Tech Hub, which is dedicated to advancing biopharmaceutical and medical device manufacturing in Puerto Rico. This designation is a testament to the region’s potential for technological growth and innovation, and it positions Puerto Rico as a key player in the evolving landscape of biotechnology and medical device manufacturing.
The PRBio Tech Hub’s mission is clear: to catalyze technological advances that will benefit Puerto Rico and contribute to the nation’s overall economic growth. With a focus on biopharmaceuticals and medical devices, the hub will play a vital role in ensuring that future industries remain firmly rooted in the United States.

Supporting Local Coordination and Planning

In addition to the Tech Hubs designations, the EDA has awarded 29 Strategy Development Grants (SDG) to communities. These grants are designed to enhance local coordination and planning activities, making selected regions even more competitive for future Tech Hubs funding opportunities. This approach ensures that the program’s benefits extend beyond the initial designations, fostering long-term growth and sustainability.

A Bright Future for Puerto Rico

The PRBio Tech Hub’s designation as a Tech Hub represents a significant step forward for Puerto Rico’s tech ecosystem. By focusing on biopharmaceutical and medical device manufacturing, the hub aligns with the island’s strengths and resources, positioning it as a hub of innovation in these critical sectors.
This designation opens doors for investment and collaboration. It signifies the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to supporting innovation and economic growth in every corner of the United States, including Puerto Rico.

What’s Next for the PRBio Tech Hub?

With the Tech Hubs program in full swing, the PRBio Tech Hub can now apply for implementation funding ranging from $40 million to $70 million. This funding will enable the hub to execute its plans and initiatives, ultimately accelerating technological advancements, creating jobs, and boosting the island’s global competitiveness.

The PRBio Tech Hub is poised to become a beacon of innovation in the biopharmaceutical and medical device manufacturing sectors, attracting talent, investment, and opportunities to Puerto Rico.
